At first, it could only be piloted by Eureka, a Humanoid Coralian, but later on it accepted Renton Thurston. In Eureka Seven Vol.1: The New Wave, Sumner Sturgeon pilots the Nirvash to defeat Captain Sawyer and find Ruri near the end of the game.
